Nurses Make It Happen: ONA Recaps the 2012 RN Labor Institute

This year’s RN Labor Institute was a huge success!  With a theme of “Nurses Make it Happen,” dozens of nurse leaders from across the state ventured to Mohican Lodge and Conference Center for the event, which included networking and educational programming designed to enrich the excellent representation ONA members get from their local unit leaders. This year’s Labor Institute curriculum included presentations about the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), wage and hour laws, just culture, delegation and more.

Nurses attending the RN Labor Institute also enjoyed greetings from Ohio AFL-CIO President Tim Burga, NFN President Barbara Crane and CEO Lorraine Seidel and U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown. A special seminar about addressing ACA changes in labor management meetings was also presented by Peter Lazes, Director of the Healthcare Transformation Project at Cornell University’s ILR School.

ONA recognizes the level of commitment among local unit leaders to improving the work lives of nurses.  This year’s RN Labor Institute included an awards ceremony to honor some significant achievements and victories.  Award winners were selected by ONA’s Economic & General Welfare Commission from nominations made earlier this year.  A summary of the awards is reflected below:
